Running to Stand Still

Hi John,

“And so she woke up
From where she was lying still
Said we’ve got to do something about where we’re going
Step on a steam train
Step out of the driving rain”

So say U2 in “Running to Stand Still” from their famous Joshua Tree album. 

From the time the credit crunch first surfaced almost a year ago, most financiers and investors have been sitting on their hands, waiting to see what’s going to happen.

But now I’m noticing a number of developments.

• From most of the articles I’ve been reading lately, it’s becoming apparent the global credit crunch is going to last longer, and could be deeper, than expected. This means money will remain expensive and hard to get.
• Many of the current casualties in the property sector would never have got off the ground in the first place, were it not for the cheap money and slack credit policies that existed at the time they were formulated. These will be sorted out only over time.
• But there are excellent ventures now appearing out there that are having difficulty proceeding because of the current extreme credit consciousness of banks and financiers. Plus there is a shortage of traditional second tier finance because some finance companies have collapsed or ceased lending.

Well we can’t all sit on our hands forever. And while there is a shortage of traditional debt finance, there is an opportunity to bring selected parties together and get sound ventures off the ground.

So I’ve decided to put together a list of what I believe are sound projects looking for innovative funding - including joint ventures. I’ve also compiled a list of people who might be interested in becoming involved. Those of you already on the list I’ll be contacting anyway.
